JOB SUMMARY
 
Employee will make inspections, preventive maintenance, and repairs to plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems, following established procedures and receiving direction from supervisor.  Responsible for maintaining the physical structures of the Madison County Jail including minor electrical repairs, such as outlets and ballasts, plumbing fixtures, ceilings, doors, HVAC systems, and all other related work as assigned.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(All duties listed may not be included in any one position, not does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)
 
A.        Repairs and Maintenance.  Repair and maintain physical structures of the Madison County jail using hand and power tools; perform minor electrical repair work to include installing lights, electrical outlets or ballast; repair plumbing fixtures and all associated systems; replace ceiling tiles; repair doors and locks; make necessary repairs to HVAC systems and perform preventative maintenance work on all systems as needed.
 
B.        Inspections.  Inspect Madison County Jail for electrical, plumbing and HVAC damages.
 
C.        General:  Performs related work as required.
 
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
 
A.        Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.  Considerable knowledge of methods, tools and practices of carpentry, plumbing, electrical and HVAC; some knowledge of blueprint reading and hazards and safety precautions of the trade.  Ability write instructions and to understand and follow instructions both written and oral effectivelyAbility to perform work requiring mechanical aptitudes.
 
B.        Education and Experience.  Must be a high school graduate or equivalent, with at least five years experience in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC repairs, and blueprint reading preferred.
Must possess both Universal Refrigerant Certification as well as Apprentice Plumbing and Gas Certification.
 
C.        Special Requirements.  Must be able to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, climb a ladder, work from scaffolding, lift up to 50lbs, and work outside in adverse weather conditions.  Must be able to work “on call”, have a valid Alabama Drivers License, a clean driving record, and be able to pass a drug screen, physical and criminal background check.

Dental Coverage: Dental coverage is included with LGHIP through Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama. LGHIP manages dental costs and provides enhanced dental benefits using negotiated discounts with in-network dentists. To locate in-network dentists go to www.bcbsal.com Assuming the services are covered you will normally only be responsible for out of pocket.

Life Insurance: Madison County provides $25,000 in life, $25,000 in accidental death and dismemberment and $25,000 line of duty insurance to eligible employees in certified positions.

Employee Retirement Plans: Employees are required to participate in the Employees Retirement System, which is administered through the Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA).
Employees participate at one of the following levels:

Tier 1: An employee who had service credit in RSA prior to January 1, 2013 and contribute at a level of 5% per pay period. *The County contributes at a rate of 10.42%.

Tier 2: An employee who was hired on or after January 1, 2013 and contribute at a level of 6% per pay period. *The County contributes at a rate of 8.17%.

*Contribution percentage is set by the Retirement Systems of Alabama and changes annually.

Employee Clinic: Madison County employees and dependents over age 12 may use the Employee Health Clinic for the low co-pay of $15.00 per visit. To be eligible to use the clinic, the employee and dependent must be enrolled in Madison County’s health insurance plan as their primary coverage.
